Struggling with anxiety and depression are two things I’m no stranger to. As far back as I can remember, I’ve suffered from social anxiety brought on by bullying in school. Which lead me down a path of depression after graduating. I’ve carried both with me into my twenties. They’ve manifested as my stressors have shifted. As well as carrying the mental pain and its weight on my body through day to day living. Some days are harder than others, naturally. It’s not my intention to share this for pity or attention. I know many of you suffer from panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, severe depression and/or crippling anxiety. I just want to say that I get it. Though it may look different for you in your life, I hope one day you can find peace, and by me sharing this you feel less alone. I’m always here to talk to you. Mental health is a topic I believe not enough light has been shed on. Not enough action is taking place to make it understandable to those that are unaware or misinformed. In my own journey to awareness I’ve learned that being vulnerable is strength and connecting with trusted allies is necessary in moving forward. Whether that be through therapy, self-developmental reading or holistic medicating.
Today I want to open the floor to discussing CBD, also known as Cannabidiol. As well as share some answers for those that want to learn more. An FAQ is listed below, please feel free to message me or leave a comment if you have a question that wasn’t addressed.
Backtracking a bit as to why I’m sharing this today – Last week I took to my Instagram, posting a CBD focused story and many of you reached out to me via direct message. After many conversations I wanted to further discuss this topic and create a post so I can link it as a resource, should anyone have further questions in the future. It’s important for me to share this information because I very strongly believe in holistic health and healing.
I have been self-medicating with CBD for quite a while. In my experience I’ve felt an extremely positive reaction to consuming it regularly. My preferred method of consumption is via oil, also known as a tincture. Which can be found at most health stores, smoke shops or online retailers. Ranging in price based on it’s dosage/mg.
CBD is commonly used by those to help alleviate inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and other conditions without adverse effects. For many, it offers a calming effect and can help aid in restful sleep. That’s not to say it causes drowsiness, however it may for some depending on the dosage and mental state. Which brings me to why all of this relates.
Implementing a regimen of CBD has given me the ability to better control my anxiety. As well as my depression, and overall quality of sleep. All of which greatly affect my mental health. I’m sure I don’t have to explain what it’s like going days on end without a solid night of rest, constantly having your mind race with irrational thoughts and fears, worrying about things not in your control. Feeling that intense emotional pain has always lead me to experience intense body aches. Eventually that prolonged cycle drives you insane. I felt like I was crazy – I still do. But now I’m at a place in my life where it’s actually manageable. If sharing my story can offer help to at least one of you in a similar position, it’s worth everything to me. No one should have to struggle with the idea that their mental health isn’t controllable.
Of course this has taken many years of hard work. Soul-searching, increasing my level of daily physical activity and rewiring my brain through a series of self-improvement sessions with a trusted life coach. I have finally arrived to the pasture of greener grass. I’m able to feel more sane and I truly believe it’s heavily reliant on the addition of CBD.
I want to be very clear in stating this is not a cure-all treatment. It is a holistic option that has no adverse effects. Meaning, it’s worth trying and seeing if you experience positive results.
I personally start my day with about 250-500mg of a CBD tincture. That’s what works best for me after some trial and error. Apparently I have a higher tolerance for it. I squeeze a dropper full of CBD oil under my tongue and let it sit for about 30 seconds, then swallow. Do I take it every day? No, but being the planner/type A personality I am I know the days I will need it most. Social events, menstrual cramps, before bed and/or as needed for pain management (emotional, mental or physical).

- Does CBD get you high?
No! That’s THC, which is illegal in most states (currently being legalized slowly in a handful of states). CBD however, is legal in all 50 states and it does NOT give you a body high.
- What is CBD?
CBD is the name of a compound found in the cannabis plant. It is one of numerous compounds found in the plant that are called cannabinoids. CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it does not change the state of mind of the person who uses it. However, it does appear to produce significant changes in the body, and it may have medical benefits.
Most of the CBD used medicinally is found in the least processed form of the cannabis plant, known as hemp.
- How can CBD benefit your health?
CBD has been studied for its use as an anti-cancer agent. A review posted to the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology notes that CBD appears to block cancer cells from spreading around the body and invading an area entirely.
The review indicates that CBD tends to suppress the growth of cancer cells and promote the death of these cells. The researchers point to studies showing that CBD may reduce anxiety behaviors in disorders such as: post-traumatic stress disorder, general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The review notes that current medications for these disorders can lead to additional symptoms and side effects, and that people may stop taking the drugs because of these unwanted effects. CBD has not shown any adverse effects in these cases to date, and the researchers call for CBD to be studied as a potential treatment method.
- Is CBD safe?
There have been no significant central nervous system side effects, or effects on vital signs or mood among people who use it either slightly or heavily. There seems to be a very common misconception that because CBD is linked to hemp that that automatically makes it wrong or dangerous, but that’s just not the case.
- Who can use CBD?
Many states have passed laws allowing for the use of a CBD extract, usually in oil form, with minimal tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and often for the treatment of epilepsy or seizures in seriously ill children.
- What quantity of CBD should I take?
CBD is most commonly taken orally as drops/tincture format under the tongue. Here are some general CBD dosage guidelines: General Health: 2.5-15mg CBD by mouth daily. To treat chronic pain: 2.5-20 mg CBD by mouth daily. To treat sleep disorders: 40-160 mg CBD by mouth daily.
- How do you determine the right dose of CBD for you?
If you’ve never tried CBD before, there are a few things you should know. While most of the headlines focus on seizures and epilepsy, pre-clinical and anecdotal evidence suggests that the cannabinoid can calm anxiety, lift mood, fight pain, and reduce damage from stress. Unfortunately, the correct dose of CBD varies significantly from individual to individual. A person with epilepsy, for example, may prefer high-dose CBD supplements. A person just looking to relax may benefit most from very low-dose CBD extracts.When trying to determine the correct amount of CBD dosage you need, here are three tips to consider:

- When beginning CBD, it’s best to start with the smallest dose possible. Everyone reacts differently to various supplements. As with any new product, it is important to become familiar with how your body responds to CBD before increasing the dose.
